Chuckya 64

Yes, after I’m finally done with CajeASM (so far), I’m thinking of working on the new SM64 Level Editor, which should replace the old, shitty Toad’s Tool 64. First off, let me consider things which will be NOT included or made in Chuckya 64:

– There will be no new level importer or whatever. Skelux’s Importer should be enough and offers all functionality you need.
– No new Text Wrangler (yet). Maybe I do it, but currently I’m focusing on making the “level editor” itself. The “extra” stuff will come later.
– No new ROM Extender. Take VL-Tone’s good ol’ ROM Extender.

A few ideas and goals which I want to manifest in Chuckya 64:

  • Chuckya 64 should be cross-platform, meaning that it should run on Windows, Linux and Mac.
  • Chuckya 64 should be as user-friendly as possible. While I liked the TT64 UI Design, it was obviously very “chaotic” and confusing. A simple, clean “typical” UI design is way better than this over colored layout crap.
  • Chuckya 64 should offer (an extra feature) a kind of interface, allowing users to “extend” the functionality of Chuckya 64 by themselves. Obviously I’m talking about “Plugins”. Those plugins can either effect Chuckya 64 itself (extended menu, new button for whatever, etc.) or effect the game (for example a “behavior script plugin” for whatever or some warp plugins, etc.)
  • Chuckya 64 should be fast and do it’s work and be less buggy. We all know the mysterious bugs and crashes occuring in TT64. This will be avoided in Chuckya 64 by keeping a clean codebase.
  • Chuckya 64 also consists of typical standards like in TT64. The ability to change cameras by the cam buttons, view on top, side, object, etc. However, the camera view can be this time controlled with WASD, while you can move the object with the arrow keys. You can also swap it under Options -> Keyboard Settings later.
  • Chuckya 64 should represent the SM64 Level as best as possible like Fog, Shadow, etc. can be previewed in the so-called: “Render Mode”. In “Edit Mode” the level will be completely visible with the textures but without the fog, etc. In “Solid Mode” textures are not displayed and you only see the surface of the level.
